Invitation for Fantasy Football (standard, pick’em, survival)

As you can see from my Yahoo Fantasy Profile, I’m a bit of a fantasy sports junky. Although I’ve dabbled with some basketball and always do March Madness pick’ems, I almost exclusively stick with football varieties.
With that, I’ve decided to set up some Wide Rights fantasy leagues: standard football, survival, pro pick’em, and college pick’em. All are welcome, from beginners to advanced players.
(For next year, if there is enough interest, I’d like to break people into skill levels beforehand, but with the season bearing down on us, I’m just going to try to fill up league by league.)
If you are a beginning player, this is a great opportunity to try it out. And feel free to email me at any time with questions or for advice.
Here is the information to join the leagues:
- All leagues will be in Yahoo.
- All leagues have the password: widerights
CURRENTLY FILLED. Will create a 2nd league tonight.
- League ID: 397711
- 12 Teams (if the 1st league fills up, I’ll create a second)
- Live Draft: August 28, 1pm EST (If that time doesn’t work for you, pre-rank your players)
- Roster Settings: QB, 3 WR, 2 RB, TE, WR/RB/TE flex, K, Def, 6 Bench
- Scoring Settings: Close to Yahoo defaults, but some minor tweaks
- JOIN HERE (enter League ID and password)
- Group ID: 6453
- Deadline for pick: Sunday, 1pm EST
- 2 Strikes (1 strike can be a little rough)
- Continues in playoffs (It’s almost impossible to make it that far, but good luck!)
- JOIN HERE (Enter group ID and password on the right; do not join a public group on the left)
- Group ID: 15180
- Pick straight up (no spread… any given Sunday, right?)
- Deadline for picks: 5 minutes before each game
- Continues in playoffs
- JOIN HERE (enter group ID and password on the right; do not join a public group on the left)
- Group ID: 6172
- Pick against the spread (with so many games having heavy favorites in college football, this makes it more interesting/challenging)
- Deadline for picks: 5 minutes before each game
- Games to pick are the Yahoo default plus AP Top 25
- JOIN HERE (enter group ID and password on the right; do not join a public group on the left)
If you have any questions about getting set up or how to play, email me. And invite your friends! I’ve set up a page specifically for fantasy sports. Once league play begins, I’ll update the page with direct links to the leagues for your convenience.
This post is going to be about fantasy sports; specifically, my most recent woe. If you’re not hooked on fantasy like me, just skip this post and come back tomorrow. I’ve been working on a “welcome-to-2010” two part post about marriage that will be much more substantive and worth reading.
Now, I’ve been playing a variety of fantasy sports since 2002. I started with basketball (hated it), focus predominantly on standard football head-to-head leagues, and dabble in survival and pick’em leagues. What happened this last week in my survivor league makes me want to cry more than any fantasy defeat ever. Proof:

It has the nerve to call me “winner” since I technically won the random group of 50 Yahoo users I was up against. But I won that weeks ago. There were only 8,399 perfect survivors left from ALL the leagues combined heading into week 17 that I was really competing with. I do not know how many people participate overall, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s over a million. And there were under ten thousand left.
Well, only 3,060 made it through the last week unscathed, and the cruel Denver Broncos kept me from being included. Better luck next year, I guess. Ugh.
